Checking out new yoga leggings from a Danish company

Has anyone else been doing yoga at home and found yourself “downward, facing dog” instead of in “downward-facing dog”? I figure it can’t just be me, since dogs (and pets in general) just seem intensely interested whenever we start rolling around on the floor. Plus Adriene (of Yoga with Adriene) has her dog Benji who sometimes reminds me of my dog Ryder. Both are usually chill and nap during yoga, but sometimes they lick something awkward or want to, well, help? (Related note: If you haven’t already gone down the rabbit hole of “pets interrupting yoga” videos, it’s well worth a few minutes.)

So of course, when I got a new pair of Moonchild Yoga Wear leggings from Aktiv, Ryder had to help me try them out.

Aktiv is a relative newcomer to the athletics and athleisure scene. It was founded in 2018 by shopkeepers Leslie and Nate who, after living in Oslo, Norway for a few years, returned home to Colorado and missed some of their favorite Scandinavian brands. They founded Aktiv to introduce American shoppers to Scandinavian athleisure that exemplifies style, function, sustainability, responsibility, and quality.

One of the brands that really appealed to me is Moonchild Yoga Wear. Moonchild Yoga Wear was founded in 2015 by Louise Wang Nielsen. Louise studied fashion, and then lived in London and fell in love with practicing yoga. When she returned to her native Denmark, she was disappointed by the muted greys and blacks of yoga wear in her home country, and founded the colorful Moonchild Yoga Wear. She incorporates pretty designs, premium Italian fabric, and ethical and sustainable manufacturing practices (ethical manufacturing is a major consideration for me personally, and all of Moonchild’s clothing is made in the European Union).

I received a pair of the deep shade full-length printed leggings. I loved the constellation design (it reminded me of my recent January bullet journal theme!) and the fade to pale pink. (Plus it perfectly matched my YogiToes towel*, lol) On the back of the leggings along the calf are subtle moon phases. These leggings are mid-rise so they hit me just above the belly button which was high enough to freely move into yoga poses. (As a side note: I recently found a pair of my original yoga leggings from 2011 at the back of my closet. Low-rise. How on Earth did I practice yoga in low-rise leggings?! Mid-rise or high-rise leggings from now on, please and thank you.)

I can sometimes wear size 6 or 8, and the sizing guide recommended if you’re between sizes to size up, so I got a size medium. That said, I think I could be comfortable in the size small. The leggings are gusseted so they offer freedom of movement which is nice. The fabric on these printed leggings is incredibly soft and thin; the leggings feel like a second skin. At first I was a little self-conscious about that since I’m used to big thick burly winter WFH leggings right now, but after I wore these printed leggings for a while I forgot about them (they really do just feel like a second skin). That said…yes…I did test for opaqueness, and they passed the test! (I’ve got the pictures to prove it, but no I’m not posting those on the Internet, lol) All the thin-ness + all the breathability + and all the coverage = perfect for a hot yoga session. Added bonus: I think these would be great leggings for whenever I’m practicing bakasana (crow pose). I usually only do crow pose when I’m wearing shorts because otherwise the legging fabric gets in the way or I don’t have enough friction to keep contact with my elbows, but since these leggings feel like a second skin I think they’d be perfect for practicing crow pose and other arm balances.

It was fun trying out these leggings for a week and I’m sure they’ll be in my regular rotation of yoga leggings going forward. You can find these ethically-manufactured and colorfully-printed Moonchild Yoga Wear leggings at Aktivstyle.com. Use the discount code “Restless” to get 10% off!

Have you ever done yoga at home and did a pet interrupt you? Was the pet just being cute, or did they freak out and couldn’t figure out what you were doing? I would love to hear your “pets interrupting yoga” stories!
